Being prepared could save you a lot of trouble later if severe weather strikes.

A key part of being ready is knowing severe weather is on the way.  You can register for alerts with the Met Office and Floodline or keep up to date on what is happening in your area via local news or radio.  Social media is also a great way of staying informed about the weather.

This winter, make sure you're prepared

In case severe weather strikes, everyone should make a plan for their home and for travelling.

For home:
Check you know how to turn off your utilities and collect together a few everyday things:

  • Emergency phone numbers
  • A torch and radio with spare batteries
  • Three days' supply of bottled water and food that won't go off
  • Essential medicines, first aid kit and toiletries

For Travelling:

  • Check the weather forecast and road conditions.  Visit trafficscotland.org
  • Consider other routes or modes of transport
  • Ensure your car or bicycle is winter ready
  • Allow extra time for your journey
  • Full charge your mobile phone
  • Wear appropriate footwear and clothing

This winter, spare a thought for your neighbours

Think now about any neighbours or family members who may need a hand if severe weather strikes.  Here are a few things that you could do to help:

  • Lend a hand with grocery shopping
  • Clear away ice or snow
  • Swap numbers with your neighbours
