Pesticides, Peregrines and Politics: Another Triumph for Birdwatchers
A free talk by Jeremy Greenwood. Surveys of Peregrine Falcon populations since the 1950s showed up the problems of organochlorine pesticides. Armed with scientific evidence, birdwatchers persuaded governments to regulate the use of these pesticides. As a result, the birds recovered as pesticide-usage declined. In this talk, Jeremy considers how this story relates to the use of scientific evidence in determining policy and he examines why Peregrines in parts of Scotland have not increased as much as they should have done.
