Dangerous Buildings and Public Safety

Where it appears to the council that any building or structure is dangerous to the extent that the safety of the public is at risk, powers exist which enable the council to take action to render a building safe or have it removed.

In Dundee it is the responsibility of the Building Standards Section to implement such action. A 24-hour, seven-day week service, for such emergencies, is operated by the Planning Division.

Should you own a property within the City, the following advice should assist you to keep your property in a safe and proper condition. Building Maintenance Information (367KB PDF)

Where  the Local Authority is required to carry out  works in relation to the dangerous structure, we may recover from the owner, any expenses reasonably incurred in doing so. The Local Authority will charge for all Contractor/Professional costs incurred including an additional 10% for administration.

We would encourage owners to carry out the required works voluntarily to avoid action by the Local Authority.
